 If someone has symptoms of hypothyroidism, (low thyroid function) a convenient way to test is by basal body temperature with an old-fashioned, oral glass thermometer.  Shake the thermometer down before going to bed, and leave it within easy reach. Immediately upon awakening, and with as little movement as possible, place the thermometer under the armpit next to the skin and leave in place for 10 minutes. Record the readings for 5 days. (Progesterone should not be used the day before or on the days that the basal temperatures are taken).  If the average temperature is below 97.6 Fahrenheit, then the diagnosis of a low functioning thyroid system is likely.
